Response to reading assignment

This reading (I got the conclusion) nicely summarized, at least for me, the reason for the summer institute. It discussed the importance and centrality of writing across the disciplines and argued for a postdisciplinarity--seeing the fluidity between the disciplines, rather than as discrete areas of knowledge. I think that we all value writing and understand that it is a way of knowing; the problem now is to intergrate it more effectively and use new student friendly approaches (like blogs, I suppose), in order to facilitate it both in and outside of the classroom.

I like the idea of returning to a "language-rich teaching and learning environment," although it seems to me that the university is not the only place that this type of change needs to be effected. Certainly part of this initiative should be directed at high schools as well. Writing and reading go hand in hand.

The National Council of Teachers of English has a major initiative to promote writing across the disciplines at all levels, including K-12. Here's their website.

As you can see, one advantage of blogs is that a reader can leave quick comments providing additional content for students--at virtually no time expenditure (it's taken me less than 2 minutes to do this comment).
